Conditions We Treat

Conditions We Treat- Our goal at The Flagstaff Surgical Center in Flagstaff, Arizona is to treat your condition, not just manage your pain.

Our providers are trained to implement Interventional Pain Management techniques to assist in the relief of your pain within the first few visits with the hope of avoiding surgery.

Our “boutique” and “concierge” business model ensures that all patients are treated with a gold standard service including immediate appointments, no over-booking, and an inviting, almost home-like, experience on each visit.

If you are experiencing pain for an extended period (even as short a time as a couple of weeks), you should see a pain specialist.  Early intervention can increase your chances of a complete recovery and prolonging professional treatment can severely worsen your condition.

More often than not, when the spine becomes injured it will more than likely degenerate without the proper care given at the time of injury or insult and the discs that lie between the vertebrae of the spine begin to bulge.

Bulging discs cause discomfort by irritating the surrounding nerves. There are several treatments available to relieve your pain such as facet injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation, and manipulation under anesthesia

If you or a loved one has been in a car (or any other motor vehicle accident) we are experts at delivering interventional pain management in tandem with your medical, chiropractic, and/or physical therapy treatment plans.

Interventional pain protocols can be utilized in conjunction with your chiropractic, physical therapy or medical treatment plans to assist in decreasing the inflammation by directly injecting the nerves that are inflamed and hindering the ability of your chiropractor or physical therapist to achieve the results they should be afforded you.  We work closely with your chiropractor, physical therapist, and medical doctor to create the perfect treatment plan for your specific medical needs.

The Flagstaff also works on a “lien” basis, which means we will treat you pending settlement of your personal injury case – no money out of your pocket until the case is settled – at which time our payment will come from the insurance adjuster or your attorney.

Degenerative Disc Disease occurs when the faulty movement of the vertebrae of the spine from trauma, poor posture, or repetitive micro-traumas cause abnormal wear and tear on the joints within the spine. This damage occurs due to misalignment of the vertebrae; accordingly, it is important to address spinal problems before they can cause damage. Deterioration of the joints can also cause discs to herniate or bulge, further irritating nerves and causing additional discomfort. Our team of doctors will give a professional diagnosis and prescribe a treatment system that can stop the damage and reduce or completely eliminate the pain.

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) is a condition caused when an individual has undergone surgery to the back or neck that did not improve their condition and therefore “failed”.

Believe it or not, more than 40% of back and neck surgery is unnecessary. Failed back syndrome is a very real and common iatrogenic (doctor-caused) condition. Obviously seeing you before you have become an FBSS statistic would be ideal; however, we do have solutions for your FBSS.

For those patients with FBSS who are experiencing a worsening of their condition post-surgery, Aurora’s providers are here to help. There are less invasive interventional treatment plans to choose from with the goal of lessening or even completely alleviating your pain.

Spinal Discs are “pillow” in the spine that have two purposes:

  1. To act like shock absorbers
  2. To act like a ligament or tendon holding the spine together.

These multi-function discs lie in between the vertebrae of the spine in order to provide cushion to the spine and surrounding nerves and keep the spine vertebrae intact with the vertebrae above and below.

Traumatic injury or even normal wear-and-tear can cause discs to herniate and put pressure on corresponding nerves, causing pain and/or tingling in one or more areas of your body.

  • If you have a herniated disc in your neck often it will give you symptoms of pain or numbness into your arm(s).
  • If the herniated disc is in your back it can result in pain or numbness in your leg(s).

Of particular interest is the fact that the arm or leg pain can be on one or both sides. Delaying the specific and proper treatment will typically cause additional damage to the disc, nerve, and other parts of your spine.

The Flagstaff Surgical Center will create an individualized treatment plan for these painful disc problems.

As a weight-bearing joint, the hip is designed to support our bodies while still permitting a large range of motion. Both injury and normal wear-and-tear can cause damage to the joint, leading to a number of painful conditions.

Perhaps the most common source of hip pain is arthritis, which can also affect other joints of the leg. The hips and legs can also be painful due to sporting activity, which can lead to irritated or injured ligaments, tendons, joints, or muscles. Sometimes discomfort in the legs can include burning or tingling. These symptoms may be a sign of radiculopathy.

We provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to your pain. If you suffer from chronic hip or leg pain, please call us to schedule an appointment today!

Spinal stenosis is the result of the central canal of the spine becoming narrower and putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves in the back. Many patients suffering from spinal stenosis experience pain that travels along the nerves into the back of the leg. Although traumatic injury can cause this problem, it is more commonly the result of deterioration and arthritis over time.

For some patients, simple lifestyle changes such as sleeping in a different position relieve the problem. For more difficult conditions, epidural steroid injections or radiofrequency ablation are proven to be effective treatments. Our physicians will make a professional diagnosis and prescribe a custom treatment to reduce or completely eliminate the symptoms.

Vertebral body fractures are most often due to osteoporosis, so treating that underlying condition is important to reduce the chance of suffering another fracture. Typical symptoms of a vertebral fracture include sudden onset of back pain while performing a normal daily activity, a hunched back, and loss of height. Our physicians will make a professional diagnosis and prescribe a custom treatment to reduce or completely eliminate the symptoms of pain associated with this condition. We offer a procedure called Vertebroplasty or Kyphoplasty which is the injection of a cement type product directly into the spinal vertebra to help the vertebrae takes its more natural position of height which allows the vertebra in question to add stability to the spine again.

The term “whiplash” is generally used to describe a sprain or strain of the neck, usually resulting from a car accident. However, we have come to recognize that whiplash from youth to adult sports is a very common cause of neck, upper back, and arm pain. The Pain from whiplash injuries frequently does not appear until the next day (or even several days later).  When dealing with youth sports, it is one of the last things that a young athlete or even a concerned parent would associate with sports whiplash. Accordingly, it is important to seek medical care as soon as possible after an accident even if the pain does not manifest instantly.

Call us to schedule a free consultation and one of our doctors will devise a treatment plan that is right for you.
